One of the hardest parts of custom folder making is managing the variations of materials. Steel not straight, titanium bowed and not the same thickness throughout, etc. All these things play havoc with knife function and Les spends a lot of my time on the custom knives fixing those inconsistencies–a lot of time!
So Les had an idea for a project where he took out as many of these variables as possible. Keeping the design simple, speeding things up, adding value and versatility by changing the engineering, producing them at a high quality and high rate were just some of the goals of Les’ mid-tech project. The initial design was his popular VECP model that Protech makes in a production version. His second mid-tech model has a larger blade than the VECP with a more compact handle–go figure–and is called the Talos.
This mid-tech Talos is one of only a few designs nowadays without a flipper, though it is entirely unnecessary with this folder. The detent is strong enough so that when it breaks, the blade flies open just like any other and locks up tightly. It is made from CTS-XHP stainless steel with dual thumb studs, a nice drop point shape and strong stonewashed finish. The handle is titanium with Morph pattern milling and an ergonomic shape that locks the design into your hand. It has a simple Torx screw construction with a flow through design, small lanyard hole and anodized titanium pocket clip. This is a superb, hard use folder without any added frills. It’s designed to be your every day carry companion and it doesn’t get much more rock solid than a Les George knife.
